ABOUT :
Traveller was a gray American Saddlebred horse, and the most famous mount of Confederate General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War. Known for his speed, strength, and courage, Lee purchased the horse in February 1862 for $200. Traveller was known to be high-strung but reliable, and he outlived Lee by a few months, passing away in 1871.

Original Name: He was born in 1857 in West Virginia and originally named "Jeff Davis" or "Greenbrier".
Acquisition: Lee bought him in early 1862; he quickly became Lee's favorite for his endurance.
Wartime Service: He was used in many major campaigns. Lee often remarked on his intelligence and stamina.
Post-War Life: Following the war, Traveller accompanied Lee to Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.
Death & Legacy: After stepping on a nail, he contracted tetanus and was put down to prevent suffering. He is buried near Lee on the Washington and Lee University
